Texas for All Coalition Condemns Latest Abortion Pill Court Ruling
Every Individual Deserves the Right to Essential Healthcare
The Texas for All Coalition, the largest progressive coalition based in Texas, strongly condemns the recent court ruling in the District Court for the Northern District of Texas in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, that further restricts access to abortion pills. This prescription medication has been available for over 20 years, is approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), and is safely used by millions around the world.
If this ruling stands it does not just affect Texans – it’s the next step that Republican elected officials have vowed to take in creating a national ban on abortion.
The decision, which prevents individuals from obtaining the safe and effective medication abortion pills through mail order or telemedicine, is a devastating blow to the reproductive rights and health care access of Texans. This ruling disproportionately impacts low-income, rural, and marginalized communities who already face significant barriers in accessing reproductive health care.
“This is a direct attack on reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, and the right to access abortion and essential health care. This ruling is also denying individuals and doctors the freedom to decide what is medically necessary to help them stay alive and healthy,” said Sissi Yado, Texas for All Coalition’s Executive Director. “We believe that every individual should have the right to make informed decisions about their bodies and their reproductive futures. Texas for All stands in solidarity with the countless affected by this decision and pledges to advocate for comprehensive, accessible, and compassionate access to abortion and reproductive health care for all.”
We are encouraged by the Department of Justice’s action to appeal the court’s decision and seek an immediate stay. Texas for All also supports the U.S. House Democrats’ new bill, Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act, that affirms the FDA has the final say in approving drugs used in medication abortion.
The Texas for All Coalition is committed to fighting for equitable access to abortion and reproductive health care for all Texans, regardless of their income, race, or geographic location.
